Seldom a week goes by when there is not live music in the pubs and arts centres in Ullapool. Renowned Scottish musicians and up and coming national (and even international) talent make Ullapool a stop on Scottish tours. In summer season, Christmas and New Year there will be numerous live bands to enjoy most weeks. The Macphail Centre is a venue for annual visits by Scottish Ballet, Chamber Orchestras and theatre companies.
ARTS
Regular exhibitions are shown at the Ullapool Arts Centre, An Talla Solais, and Ceilidh Place and there are several small artist run studios to discover when out and about.
SHOPS
Ullapool benefits from a range of high quality shops. We have two well stocked independent bookshops and a number of local craft shops. A Saturday market during summer showcases local, food delicacies and crafts. Necessities are catered for by a small deli and a small but well stocked Tesco supermarket .
BEACHES
Secluded and scenic, golden sand beaches within easy striking distance of Ullapool – Gruinard Bay, Achnahaird, Achmelvich, Clachtoll, Clashnessie and many others.
WALKING
There are innumerable walks to be savoured around Ullapool and even from the doorstep of the Stonehouses on the Ullapool Hill Path network. Maps and guides for local walks are available for your use and reference.
WILDLIFE
Seals and otters are frequently sighted along the coast and more occasionally dolphins and whales. Sea, moor and forest birdlife and numerous deer are to be seen around Ullapool.
MOUNTAIN WALKING & CLIMBING
Adventurous walks, climbs and ascents can be enjoyed among the numerous mountain areas surrounding Ullapool. The North West Highlands is a renowned mountain area with some of the most spectacular mountains and mountain ranges on the British mainland. There are several Munros (mountains over 3000 feet) within easy striking distance of Ullapool but don’t miss the spectacular beauty of the lower Assynt and Coigach mountains.
GUIDED MOUNTAIN WALKING & CLIMBING

SEA KAYAKING
Kayaking tours and tuition are available locally including day and half day trips: North West Sea Kayaking.
FISHING
Permits can be purchased for fishing on local rivers and lochs.
ISLAND AND BOAT EXCURSIONS (summer only)
Wildlife and scenery can be explored by taking one of a number of island tours from Ullapool (Isle Martin and Summer Isles) and Achiltibuie (Summer Isles). The Wildlife Trust and sea bird sanctuary Handa Island can be visited on a day trip from Ullapool.
TOURING AND SIGHTSEEING
Within easy reach there are various sites of specific interest, including Corrieshalloch Gorge, a suspension bridge across a deep chasm and waterfall, Knockan Crag and the North West Highlands Geopark where you can explore the phenomenal geology of the Northwest Highlands).
WHISKY SAMPLING AND MAKING
The Ullapool Ceilidh Place specialises in whisky while distllery tours and tasting can be experienced at the Glen Ord Distillery between Inverness and Ullapool and other distilleries within a day trip of Ullapool.
THE EAST COAST & FURTHER AFIELD
Of course our passion is for the spectacular NW Highlands, but it should be noted that Ullapool is also convenient for exploring parts of the North East Coast and Loch Ness. Inverness is within an easy 70 minutes drive with various visitor attractions including Culloden Battle Field site and Boat trips down Loch Ness.
PUBLIC GARDENS
The Gulf stream keeps the North West Highlands surprisingly mild and as a result exotic plants thrive in a number of renowned gardens:
Inverewe Gardens: outstanding National Trust managed gardens at Poolewe.
Lechmelm Gardens and Arboretum outside Ullapool – a smaller version of Inverewe described as a ‘hidden gem’ in guidebooks.

The North West Highlands is a paradise for the amateur and professional photographer particularly in spring, winter and autumn when the light and weather conditions create unparalleled depth and drama. Local photographers’ work can be viewed in local cafes and galleries.
